US official visits India – level 3

28-05-2026 07:00

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in India for a high-profile diplomatic visit to strengthen the partnership between the two nations.

Rubio met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss regional peace, trade, and defense cooperation.

A major focus of the visit is energy security, as the war in Iran has caused a global energy crisis. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has stopped, which has heavily impacted India, which imports over 80% of its energy. Rubio offered American energy products to help India diversify its supply, which could also reduce the 58.2 billion US trade deficit with India.

The geopolitical situation remains complicated. While Trump recently lowered tariffs on Indian goods after India agreed to buy 500 billion dollars worth of American products, a final trade deal is still being negotiated. Additionally, Rubio will attend a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting on May 26 to discuss security in the Indo-Pacific region, a move closely watched as India prepares to host both the Quad and the BRICS summits later this year.

Difficult words: high-profile (getting a lot of attention and interest from the public and media), diversify (to include many different types of things, so you do not depend on just one), deficit (the amount by which something (especially money) is too small or less than needed).

Which commitment by India prompted Trump to lower U.S. tariffs on its goods?
