The history of Venice – level 1

29-05-2026 15:00

Long ago, in the 6th century, people run away from a war. They go to live in a wet, muddy place by the sea. This happens in the north of Italy. This place becomes Venice.

People must build houses on the mud. They put many big wooden sticks into the ground. There is no air in the mud. The wood stays strong today, even after 1,500 years! In the past, Venice does not have land for growing food. So people buy and sell things. They use boats to trade things like spices, silk, and beautiful glass with other countries. Venice becomes very rich.

Today, Venice is famous all over the world. Millions of tourists visit the city. But Venice has too much water now. There is water in the streets many times a year. Also, tourists hurt the wooden sticks.

Difficult words: muddy (covered in wet, soft earth), wooden (when something comes from trees), silk (a soft and very expensive cloth).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What items did the people of early Venice trade with other countries?
