Finland’s Marimekko designs – level 3
01-06-2026 15:00
The famous Finnish design company Marimekko has been adding bright colors and bold patterns to fashion and housewares for 75 years.
In Finland, where spring arrives late, designers find their inspiration in nature and local community gardens.
Maija Louekari draws many abstract illustrations that are later printed onto millions of meters of fabric. The name Marimekko means Mary’s dress, and represents an everyday woman. Founded by Armi Ratia after World War II, the company initially struggled because its patterns were too bold. To help people imagine how to use the fabrics, Ratia organized a fashion show, which became an immediate success.
The brand received a massive global boost in 1960 when Jackie Kennedy wore a Marimekko dress on a magazine cover. Today, the brand is a core part of Finnish identity, and almost every Finnish home owns at least one Marimekko item. This allows naturally quiet people to express their colorful side through their clothes.
Difficult words: housewares (objects and equipment used in the home, especially in the kitchen or dining room), abstract (art or design that does not show realistic people or things, but uses shapes, lines, and colors instead), bold (strong, bright, and clear).
