Men stay in a cave for one week – level 3
02-06-2026 07:00
On Friday night, rescuers in Laos successfully evacuated the first of five villagers who had been trapped inside a flooded cave for more than a week.
The men originally entered the cave to search for gold but became trapped when heavy rain caused sudden flash flooding. One villager managed to escape early and informed the authorities. Divers discovered the remaining five men alive on Wednesday, about 300 meters from the cave entrance. Rescue workers provided them with water, soft food, and waterproof blankets to keep them warm.
While the first man was safely taken for a medical check, the evacuation of the other four was paused for a day. Rescuers are also searching for two additional people who are still missing deeper inside the cave where the water is extremely deep. Some members of the rescue team previously helped save the 12 schoolboys and their football coach from a Thai cave back in 2018.
Difficult words: trapped (unable to escape from a dangerous or closed place), flash flooding (a very fast and sudden flood, usually caused by heavy rain).
