Golf makes a soldier happy again – level 3

Jesse Williamson is a retired US Marine who served as an infantryman in Afghanistan. In 2009, his vehicle hit a roadside bomb. Jesse survived, but he lost both of his legs after 40 surgeries and lost several close friends in the explosion.

Returning home was mentally very difficult. He missed the military and turned to drugs to cope with his trauma. His life changed during a rehabilitation program when a friend introduced him to golf. Playing golf every day helped Jesse focus on the present moment and quiet his racing thoughts. He fell in love with the game, joined a team for injured veterans, and even became a golf instructor. Today, Jesse and his friend run a nonprofit organization that helps other veterans heal through golf. Famous professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau even sent Jesse a message to praise his inspiration and strength. Jesse believes that golf gives people a sense of purpose and structure. He has proved that sport can be a powerful tool for emotional and physical healing.

Difficult words: infantryman (a soldier who fights on foot rather than in a tank or plane), trauma (a very bad or shocking experience that hurts a person’s mind or emotions for a long time), purpose (a reason to live, work, or do something).

You can watch the video news lower on this page.

What activity helped Jesse focus on the present, quiet his racing thoughts, and ultimately led him to become a golf instructor and co-run a nonprofit that helps other veterans heal?
