Golf makes a soldier happy again – level 2

04-06-2026 07:00

Jesse Williamson was a soldier in the US Marine Corps. In 2009, he went to Afghanistan, where a big bomb hit his car. Jesse was hurt very badly. Doctors tried to help him, but he lost both of his legs, and his best friends died.

When Jesse came back home, he was very sad and lonely. He missed his military life, and he started using drugs to forget his pain. Later, he took part in a rehabilitation program to get help. There, a friend showed him the game of golf. Jesse played golf every day for eight months. The game helped him stop thinking about bad memories because he had to focus on the ball.

Now, Jesse is a golf teacher and has a special group that helps other old soldiers learn golf. He says that golf gave him a new life, a new team, and a happy purpose.

Difficult words: rehabilitation (a special place where people get help to heal after a bad injury or stop using drugs), memory (what you remember from the past), purpose (a goal in life).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What game did Jesse play every day for eight months during rehabilitation that helped him stop thinking about bad memories?
