A nurse kills babies – level 3

22-08-2023 07:00

British nurse Lucy Letby, 33, was found guilty of murdering seven newborn babies and attempting to kill six others at a hospital in northwest England where she worked.

The verdict came after a 10-month trial, making Letby the most prolific serial child killer in modern British history. She injected victims with insulin, air, or force-fed them milk, often attacking during night shifts. Letby’s actions were revealed when doctors noticed unexplained deaths and collapses in the neonatal unit.

Police investigation led to Letby’s arrest. She confessed in a note found at her home. Letby portrayed a happy image on social media but was determined to kill, as revealed during the trial. She blamed unsafe staffing levels and dirty conditions. She’ll be sentenced soon.

Difficult words: prolific (producing much), neonatal unit (a department in a hospital where newborn babies stay), portray (to make a picture of).
