A planned attack at a Taylor Swift concert – level 3

14-08-2024 07:00

A 19-year-old suspect was arrested on Wednesday for planning a suicide attack at a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, Austria.

The teen, who had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, confessed that he intended to use explosives and knives to kill a large crowd. The three sold-out concerts at Ernst Happel Stadium expected to attract over 195,000 people, have been canceled. Austrian authorities discovered chemicals at the suspect’s home, which he had allegedly stolen from his previous workplace. The suspect, who has North Macedonian roots, was arrested along with two others.

The Austrian Chancellor expressed relief that a potential tragedy was avoided, and the investigation is ongoing to understand the extent of the planned attack. All tickets for the concerts will be refunded for safety reasons.

Difficult words: pledge (to promise or be committed to a cause), allegiance (loyalty or support to a group or cause), extent (the degree or level of something that happens).
