A singer wins elections in Nepal – level 3

A new political party in Nepal has won a large victory in the country’s general election.

The three-year-old party gained 182 of the 275 seats in parliament, the biggest majority in more than 60 years. Its leader, Balendra Shah, a former rapper and mayor of Kathmandu, is now expected to become the next prime minister. His music often criticized corruption and powerful politicians, which made him popular with young voters.

The election happened after major protests led by Gen Z last September. The protests started partly because the government tried to ban social media and because many young people were angry about corruption and the lack of jobs. During the protests, 77 people died, and the government collapsed.

Young voters supported Shah because they wanted new leaders instead of older politicians who had ruled the country for many years. His party promises to investigate corruption, create jobs, and grow the economy. However, critics say these goals may be difficult to achieve.

Difficult words: corruption (dishonest use of power), Gen Z (people born roughly between the late 1990s and early 2010s; today they are mostly teenagers or young adults).
