Al Niño changes – level 2

08-05-2023 07:00

Changes in weather patterns will have a big impact on the global economy.

The La Niña weather pattern, which caused cooler sea surface temperatures along the Pacific Ocean equator, disappeared last fall after lasting for several years. Now, the El Niño pattern is forming and it brings warmer water temperatures.  The disappearance of La Niña caused heavier rainfall and snowfall in the dry western United States. The upcoming El Niño may bring some more rainfall to the corn belt in the United States, but it could also lead to hotter and drier conditions in parts of India and eastern Australia.

Moreover, El Niño could bring more cyclones to the Pacific Ocean and reduce the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean. But the hurricanes which form could be more intense. Experts need to closely monitor the changes in weather patterns.

Difficult words: weather pattern (what the weather is like for some time), disappearance (when something does not exist anymore), intense (strong or great).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the possible economic implications of an El Niño weather pattern?
