An expensive watch sells at auction – level 2
26-05-2023 15:00
On Tuesday, a valuable watch made by Patek Philippe sold for 6.2 million dollars at an auction in Hong Kong.
The auction took place at Phillips’ new headquarters in West Kowloon Cultural District and it lasted about seven minutes. Mostly collectors and representatives from mainland China and Hong Kong attended the auction. The watch belonged to the last emperor of China’s Qing Dynasty who gave it to his interpreter Georgy Permyakov during their time together in the Soviet Union from 1945 to 1950. It’s not known when or how Emperor Aisin-Gioro Puyi acquired the watch, but it was made in 1937.
Also, a red paper fan which Permyakov got from Puyi in Tokyo sold at the auction for 78,000 dollars.
Difficult words: valuable (very important and expensive), headquarters (the main office of a company or organization), acquire (to buy or get).
