Asphalt from cashew shells – level 2
05-11-2024 15:00
Frankfurt Airport in Germany is using a new kind of eco-friendly asphalt made from cashew shells.
A company called B2 Square made this special asphalt, called bio-bitumen, which replaces regular asphalt. Regular asphalt comes from oil, but bio-bitumen is a mixture of natural resins with extracts from cashew shells. This process is better for the environment and helps the airport reach its goal of zero carbon emissions by 2045. According to project manager Axel Conrad, this bio-bitumen is of higher quality than traditional asphalt, and it stores around 34,400 pounds of CO2 in every 2,200 pounds of material. Bio-asphalt is also ten times stronger than regular asphalt.
To test it, the airport put bio-asphalt on one side of the road and regular asphalt on the other. If it works well, the airport will use more eco-asphalt in the future.
Difficult words: asphalt (material used for making roads), resin (a sticky substance from plants or trees), traditional (usual).

What is the environmental benefit of using bio-bitumen, made from cashew shells, instead of regular asphalt at Frankfurt Airport?
