Big oil company hurts nature – level 1

Ecopetrol is a big oil company in Colombia. It makes many places dirty with oil, like rivers and wetlands.
A worker finds secret information about oil spills. Ecopetrol does not speak about some of them. The company says it follows the rules. Andrés sees dirty water and tells people about it. Later, he gets messages which scare him. He must leave Colombia. It is not safe for him to stay. The oil industry in Colombia has problems with bad people.
People who talk about pollution are not safe. Some get scary messages, some even die. Andrés lives in Germany now. He works to help the natural world.
Difficult words: wetland (a large area of land with lots of water in it), oil spill (when oil gets into the sea or river), pollution (dirty water, air, or land).
