Big Tobacco Canada lawsuit – level 2

22-10-2024 15:00

Three big cigarette companies Philip Morris, British American Tobacco, and Japan Tobacco will pay 23.6 billion dollars to end a lawsuit in Canada.

The lawsuit started in 2015 when smokers and former smokers sued these companies, saying they didn’t warn people about the risks of smoking, even though they knew cigarettes caused cancer since the 1950s. A court in Quebec decided the companies had to pay 15 billion dollars. As a result, their Canadian branches had big problems with money.

The companies started negotiating the final payment in 2019. They agreed on the total amount but it is unclear how they will divide the payment. The final vote on the plan should be in December 2024.

Difficult words: lawsuit (a case in court between people or organizations), cancer (a disease when cells in a part of the body start to grow without control), divide (to separate into parts).

What was the reason for the lawsuit against Philip Morris, British American Tobacco, and Japan Tobacco in Canada that started in 2015?
