Britain’s new prime minister – level 2
12-09-2022 07:00
Last week, Liz Truss became Britain’s new prime minister. She beat her rival Rishi Sunak, and she became the new leader of the Conservative Party.
Truss became the party’s fourth prime minister since 2015. She replaced Boris Johnson at a very difficult time when the country has many problems. Britain depends on Russian gas, and the war in Ukraine is raising the prices dramatically. The cost of living is also rising, energy prices upset many people, and many workers are on strikes in different industries.
Truss promised that she would cut down taxes, and she would deal with problems with energy supplies soon. Experts said that no prime minister has started work in such a difficult situation.
Difficult words: rival (a person who competes with someone), strike (a protest), cut down (to reduce).
