Britain’s political crisis – level 2

21-05-2026 07:00

The British government is in a very difficult situation, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer may have to leave his job.

This crisis started after his political party lost many local elections. After these bad results, several important politicians resigned from the government. The Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, left and said the Prime Minister didn’t have a clear plan for the country.

Streeting announced that he wants to become the new leader and prime minister. Another popular politician also wants to challenge Starmer, but he needs to win a special local election first to get into parliament.

This political situation is a big problem for the European Union. The UK and the EU were planning to sign a new deal to make it easier for Britain to sell food to Europe, but now, it will be hard to finish these talks. British leaders are also worried because an anti-EU political party is becoming more popular. Reports say that more than half of British voters now wish to be back in the EU.

Difficult words: resign (to officially say that you are leaving your job), Health Secretary (the government minister who is in charge of hospitals, doctors, and the country’s healthcare system), challenge (to invite someone to fight or compete in a race, or to question their power).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What does the other popular politician need to accomplish before entering parliament and challenging Starmer?
