Brussels bans e-scooters – level 2
25-06-2026 07:00
Brussels will ban all rental e-scooters from its streets in January 2027. The capital of Belgium is following other big European cities like Paris, Madrid, and Prague, which already stopped them.
Local leaders made this decision because accidents increased by 26% in one year, and hurt over 600 people. Doctors say that e-scooter accidents often cause bad head injuries. Also, people leave the scooters in bad places on the pavements. This blocks the way and makes walking dangerous for old people and people who cannot move easily. The government also said that dangerous criminal groups and drug sellers use these scooters to commit crimes.
Instead of e-scooters, Brussels will give more money to its bike-sharing system and put more regular and electric bicycles on the streets.
Difficult words: rental (something that you pay money to use instead of buying it), pavement (a path next to a road for people to walk on), commit (to do something illegal, bad, or wrong).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
By what percentage did e-scooter accidents increase in one year, and how many people were hurt?
