Cancer in space – level 1
20-03-2024 07:00
Scientists study how cancer cells grow in space. The result surprises everyone. Cancer cells grow much faster than on Earth. Scientists believe that the reason is weak gravity.
Scientists focus on a gene called adar1. This gene makes cancer return. When scientists change this gene, they stop cancer cells from multiplying. A drug named Rebecsinib works against this gene. Astronauts help by giving their blood for testing. However, the drug is not ready for people yet. Scientists hope to start tests soon to use this new way to stop cancer.
Difficult words: cell (the smallest part of a living thing), gravity (the force which pulls things towards the Earth), multiply (to increase a lot in number).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What potential impact do you think Rebecsinib could have on cancer treatment, and what role do astronauts play in helping to develop this drug?
