Catalan Protests in Barcelona – level 3
05-10-2018 07:00
Almost one year has passed since an illegal referendum for Catalonian independence took place.
In San Jaume Square, Barcelona, protesters for Catalan faced off against riot police, who began fighting the protesters after the protesters hurled paint and projectiles.
Police were trying to keep the protesters away from another protest group who wants the police to get better pay. Police arrested one man as this protest turned into violence.
Spain’s government is in a financial crisis, and political tensions are high in Catalonia.
Difficult words: referendum (when people vote yes or no for something), hurl (throw with a lot of force), projectile (something that people throw as a weapon), crisis (a problematic situation), political tensions (problems, bad relations between people in politics).
