Children in Libya get help – level 3
08-06-2026 15:00
In Libya, many children with special needs and learning disabilities are left outside the public school system because regular schools lack trained staff and proper resources.
To change this, two women opened a private center called Elim in 2020. Located about 80 kilometers from Tripoli, the center helps more than 40 children and teenagers every day with individual lessons, and it focuses on learning difficulties and speech problems. While other private centers in the capital are far too expensive for ordinary people, Elim supports low-income families by charging only a very small, token fee. Parents say the center makes a huge difference; without this support, many children suffer from depression and social anxiety because they cannot communicate.
For example, a 6-year-old girl with Down syndrome couldn’t speak and used to scream out of frustration. Today, after attending the sessions, she can speak clearly and express her feelings, which has made her confident and happy.
Difficult words: token fee (a very small amount of money that you pay for something, just to show a rule or support, not a real price), anxiety (a strong feeling of worry, fear, or nervousness about what might happen), frustration (the feeling of being annoyed, angry, or disappointed because you cannot do what you want to do).
