Children stop a bus – level 3

05-05-2026 15:00

A group of middle school students in Mississippi prevented a serious accident after their bus driver suffered a severe asthma attack and passed out.

The bus was traveling on a four-lane highway with about 40 children on board when the emergency happened.

Several students aged 12 to 15 acted quickly to stop the vehicle. A 12-year-old boy grabbed the steering wheel when he saw the bus swerve, while another boy managed to use the brakes to slow the bus down. Other students also played critical roles in the rescue. One girl called 911 for help, while another one used the driver’s nebulizer to assist her. Another student informed the school district about the situation.

The students managed to safely park the bus in the highway median. The driver later credited the children with saving her life. To honor their bravery, the students will be rewarded with a special field trip and lunch.

Difficult words: asthma (a medical condition that makes breathing difficult), swerve (to change direction suddenly while you are driving), nebulizer (a small machine that helps you breathe medicine), median (the area in the middle of a big road that separates cars going in different directions).

What sequence of actions did the students take to safely park the bus in the highway median?
