Cleaning Mount Everest – level 1

10-07-2024 07:00

Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. It is full of trash.

Since 1953, many climbers leave trash there.  A Sherpa who leads a cleanup team says that cleaning the trash will take years. The Nepal government pays a team to clean the trash. This year, the team takes away 11 tons of trash, four dead bodies, and a skeleton. There may be 40-50 tons of trash in the last camp before the summit. The trash is old tents, food packs, gas bottles, and ropes. The trash is frozen at 8,000 meters. Cleaning is hard. There is bad weather and little air. New rules and more information reduce new trash. But most of it is old. The oldest thing so far is a battery from 1957.

Difficult words: trash (things which people throw away), skeleton (the structure of bones, the hard parts in a body), summit (the highest point).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the challenges faced by the cleanup team in removing trash from Mount Everest?
