Companies take people’s land to build data centers – level 2
24-06-2026 07:00
Many new computer data centers are opening in the state of Georgia. These centers need a very big amount of electricity to work. Because of this, the local power company is building more than 1,000 miles of new electrical lines.
Most of this new energy will go directly to these big companies. But the companies are building power lines through the backyards of ordinary families. Workers are cutting down hundreds of trees, which ruins the beautiful view.
Local homeowners are very angry because their houses are losing a lot of value, and they cannot sell them. The power company offers money to the families, but they say it is not enough to buy a new house. Homeowners feel they have no power to stop the company because the law allows the company to take private land.
Difficult words: ordinary (normal), value (how much money somebody would pay to buy something), private (when something belongs to one person or family).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How have more than 1,000 miles of new electrical lines being built through ordinary families' backyards affected homeowners, and why do they feel they cannot stop the power company?
