Dangerous Lettuce – level 1

Health officials find dangerous bacteria in a type of lettuce. It is called romaine lettuce. People who eat this lettuce end up in hospital. They have serious health problems. Currently, more than 100 people from 23 US states are in hospital.

Health officials believe that the bacteria comes from romaine lettuce from Salinas, California. However, they do not know the exact place. They advise people not to eat romaine lettuce from the Salinas area.

Farmers must stop selling romaine lettuce until the end of the growing season.
