Fake videos about Santorini eruption – level 1
17-02-2025 07:00
Fake videos of a volcano eruption in Santorini are spreading online. AI makes some of them, and others are not real videos of Santorini. Many people believe them, but they are false.
One video shows lava in the sea. But the water looks strange. Another shows people running, but their faces look wrong. A third video is from New Zealand, not Santorini. Some people think that Turkey makes the videos. They believe that Turkey wants to hurt Santorini’s tourism.
But Santorini has a real problem—many small earthquakes. Over 800 earthquakes happen since January. Many people leave the island. The Greek government is giving 3 million euros to help people leave safely. Experts do not know if a big earthquake will come.
Difficult words: strange (not usual), earthquake (when the earth moves), safely (without danger).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Which details in the videos suggest they might not be genuine, and what crisis on the island has led to people leaving while the government offers 3 million euros for safe departures?
