Farmers in Europe protest – level 1
19-03-2024 15:00
European Commission wants to change farming in Europe.
This happens because many farmers in Europe are unhappy. They protest. The protests happen in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and other countries. Farmers do not like EU rules about climate change, imports, and costs. The changes would give farmers more freedom and less control from governments.
The Commission says that the changes are fair to farmers. They help them work better. President Ursula von der Leyen says these ideas come from talking to farmers, leaders, and other important people.
Difficult words: import (things which one country buys or brings in from another country), freedom (when someone is free).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are some reasons why farmers in Europe might be unhappy with the EU's rules about climate change, imports, and costs?
