Fire in Portugal – level 3
22-06-2017 15:00
At least 58 people died by wildfires raging across central Portugal, which the country’s Prime Minister called the ‘biggest tragedy of human life we have known in years’.
As many as 600 firefighters have been trying to tackle the deadly blaze with difficulties due to its intensity. Spanish rescue workers said that they will assist the Portuguese firefighters in the ongoing operations.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but recent high temperatures and no rain may have contributed. Sixteen of those killed died in their cars as the fires swept across the roads.
Difficult words: rage (spread rapidly and uncontrollably), tackle (deal with), blaze (fire).
