Fireworks and the environment – level 2

06-01-2025 07:00

New Year’s Eve in Southern California brought worries about air pollution and wildfires. Experts expected that air quality in Los Angeles could become unhealthy during the celebrations.

Fireworks cause a lot of pollution, including small particles and metals which can harm health.

Fireworks can also start wildfires. The National Weather Service has warned about dangerous fire conditions in areas like the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains. Dry weather, strong winds, and low humidity make it easier for fires to start and spread.

Authorities told people not to use fireworks or anything that could cause a fire. Anyone caught with illegal fireworks could get a fine or go to jail.

Difficult words: pollution (dirty air, water, or land), particle (a small object), humidity (water in the air).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
