Former leader of Philippines arrested – level 1

17-03-2025 15:00

Rodrigo Duterte is the president of the Philippines in the past.

Police arrest him when he is on his way from Hong Kong. He goes to court in The Hague.

The International Criminal Court says that many people die during Duerte’s war on drugs. Some people are happy about the arrest. They think it is fair. But his lawyers say that the court cannot arrest him. The Philippines leave this court in 2019. Some people want him to come back. They will show they are not happy. They plan to protest.

People in the Philippines have different opinions. Some think Duterte is a good leader. Others think he does very bad things.

Difficult words: arrest (to take someone to a place where police can speak to them), lawyer (a person who helps people with the rules of a country), opinion (what someone thinks).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How do the differing responses—ranging from support of the arrest, claims of its unfairness by his lawyers, to planned protests—reflect the varied opinions people hold about his leadership and actions during the war on drugs?
