France protests – level 2
31-03-2023 15:00
Last week, more than 6,000 people protested in Western France. But authorities didn’t allow the demonstration.
People protested against building a reservoir for farm irrigation. They said that the reservoir was far too big and only big farms would benefit from it. Authorities, on the other hand, said that the reservoir was necessary because of the changing weather. Last summer in France was the hottest in history. The reservoir would hold water and farmers could use it in times of drought.
Many protests are taking place in France right now. A few weeks ago, the French government approved a pension reform, which started a wave of violent protests in many cities across the country.
Difficult words: irrigation (bringing water to land and fields), benefit (to have a good or helpful result of effect), drought (a long period with little or no rain).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of the reservoir in Western France?
