Fuel prices in Europe are growing – level 2

24-03-2026 15:00

Petrol is becoming very expensive in Europe because of the war in Iran. When there is a war in a country with oil, the price of fuel goes up everywhere.

In Germany and Austria, the price rose by about 13% or 14% in only two weeks. This is a big problem for people who drive to work. European governments want to help. In Austria and Germany, gas stations can only raise their prices at certain times. In Hungary, the government put a limit on the price for local drivers.

Experts think prices might stay high for a long time. If the oil price stays above 100 dollars, people in Europe will pay millions of euros more every day for petrol.

Difficult words: fuel (a substance like petrol, diesel, or wood which makes power for a machine), gas station (a place where you stop your car to buy petrol or diesel so you can keep driving), limit (the greatest or smallest amount of something that is allowed or possible).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What percentage increase did petrol prices in Germany and Austria experience in just two weeks?
