Greenland women want justice from Denmark – level 2
11-03-2024 07:00
143 Indigenous women in Greenland are suing Denmark.
They say that doctors implanted them with intrauterine devices without their permission in the 1960s and 1970s. The women ask for 5.8 million euros, 40,000 euros each. They claim that Danish authorities violated their rights because they wanted to control the growing population. An investigation started in 2022, but the women went to court. They want to solve the issue quickly because they are getting old.
This problem is only one of Greenland’s actions against indigenous people, including forced relocation and attempts to integrate indigenous people into Danish society.
Difficult words: intrauterine device (a small plastic and metal device that a doctor puts into a woman’s uterus so that she doesn’t get pregnant), violate (break a rule), relocation (moving to another place).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What other actions have Greenland taken against indigenous people and why is it important for these issues to be addressed quickly?
