Intersex athletes – level 2

11-02-2025 07:00

Athletes Imane Khelif and Caster Semenya have a condition called DSD, which means their bodies are different from typical male or female bodies.

Some people believe this gives them an unfair advantage because they have higher testosterone levels.

In the past, sports organizations tested athletes’ chromosomes to decide if they could compete as women. Today, different organizations have different rules. World Athletics says some athletes must lower their testosterone, but the International Olympic Committee doesn’t have strict rules and focuses on inclusion.

Semenya was born and raised as a woman. She couldn’t compete unless she changed her natural hormone levels. She fought against this rule, which she found unfair. The argument about fairness in women’s sports is still going on.

Difficult words: advantage (something that helps someone do better), inclusion (including all people and groups in activities or organizations), argument (a reason which supports an idea or action).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How do World Athletics’ rules regarding lowering testosterone levels compare with the International Olympic Committee’s approach, and what impact might these differences have on athletes like Semenya in the debate about fairness in women’s sports?
