ISS air leaks – level 2
11-06-2026 07:00
Five astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) had to go inside their SpaceX Crew Dragon spaceship for safety. They did this because air was leaking from a Russian part of the station.
While two Russian cosmonauts fixed the leaks, the other astronauts waited inside their ship in case they needed to return to Earth. A space expert said the situation was serious, but the crew didn’t have to wear their spacesuits. They waited for a few hours, and then they could go back into the station.
The space station is very old – some parts went to space in 1998. It is like an old car which needs a lot of repairs. The station gets stressed when other spaceships hit it hard during docking, which causes small cracks. If there was a big danger, the astronauts could close the doors of their spaceship and leave the station in just one minute.
Difficult words: leak (when water or gas gets out from a container), dock (to bring two ships or spacecraft together and connect them), crack (a thin line which breaks something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
How quickly could the astronauts leave the station if there was a big danger?
