Kenya floods – level 3
03-05-2024 15:00
Kenya’s president William Ruto has announced evacuation plans for areas at risk of flooding or landslides following severe flooding that claimed at least 169 lives.
The Army is mobilized to help with evacuations, especially in the Rift Valley, north of Nairobi, where an overflowing reservoir wiped out houses and caused significant casualties. Rescue teams, including the Red Cross and National Youth Service, are using bulldozers to clear debris and they are searching for bodies along riverbanks. Despite criticism, the president defends the government’s response and he assures that emergency plans are in place.
The government is considering declaring a national disaster; however, the immediate focus remains on providing aid and coordinating emergency responses.
Difficult words: mobilized (organized and sent out for action), casualty (a person killed or injured in a war or accident).
