Mali conflict – level 1

06-05-2026 07:00

There is a war in Mali. The government is losing its power in the north. Groups of rebels are winning in many towns. Some people say that even some soldiers are helping the rebels. The government is not strong.

A long time ago, France helps Mali. But they are not helping now. Russia is helping in Mali. Russia sends some soldiers. But the country is very big. There are not enough soldiers to guard everything. The rebels are now closing roads to the main city. People have problems to get food.

If the rebels take over the north, they may go into other countries too. Many people are afraid that problems will start in other countries, too.

Difficult words: government (people who make rules of a country), rebel (a person who fights against the government of their country), guard (to watch a place or people to keep them safe).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What impact does the rebels’ closure of roads to the main city have on its residents?
