Mali conflict – level 3

06-05-2026 07:00

The security situation in Mali is becoming very dangerous as the military government struggles to keep control.

Experts report that several major army camps and towns in the north have already fallen to rebels and armed groups. There is evidence that some military officers might be helping the rebels by giving them secret information.

The situation is like the crisis in 2012, but this time, France is unlikely to help because its relationship with the Malian government is broken. At this time, the capital city, Bamako, is not under direct attack, but it is being blocked. Armed groups are trying to stop supplies and attack the airport to make people tired of the trouble. The Malian government relies heavily on Russian forces for help; however, these forces don’t have enough soldiers to protect everything. Other countries like Turkey provide drones but don’t get involved in the actual fighting.

There is a serious risk that if the government loses more ground, northern Mali could again become a safe place for dangerous groups to grow and spread into neighboring countries.

Difficult words: rebel (a person who fights against the government of their country), involved (to take part in something or be a part of a group).

What potential consequence could occur if the government loses more ground in northern Mali?
