Migration and EU elections – level 2
31-05-2024 15:00
The EU will have European Parliament elections from June 6th to 9th.
Voters will choose 720 lawmakers. Each country gets a different number of seats according to its population. Germany has the most with 96 seats. Every EU country must have at least six representatives. These lawmakers will help pick the president of the European Commission. One big issue is migration. Many migrants die trying to reach the EU. The EU passed a new law to help deal with migration. The law allows countries to send asylum seekers to other EU states and send them back to their countries.
This law worries some groups about human rights. Migration is a big topic in countries like Greece and Italy. A study showed that it is not the biggest worry for most voters but is more important in countries where migrants arrive, for example, Greece or Italy.
Difficult words: lawmaker (a person who makes and changes laws), issue (a problem), asylum seeker (a person who looks for a place to stay).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is one of the major issues that will be addressed by the lawmakers elected in the European Parliament elections, and how has the EU recently attempted to manage this issue?
