More California Fires – level 2

01-09-2020 07:00

Hot dry weather often causes fires in the US state of California. This time, more than 650 fires burned 2,000 square miles, and they destroyed over 1,400 buildings in Northern California. Two of the blazes were among the biggest in California’s history.

After many dry days, the weather improved a little, which helped firefighters stop all fires. People started to return to their destroyed homes; however, between Tuesday and Wednesday, more than 400 lightning strikes caused new fires. Luckily, firefighters got all the new fires under control.

A helicopter pilot and six other people died in these fires. Currently, fires are also burning in Colorado, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico.

Difficult words: blaze (a very large fire), improve (to get better), lightning strike (when a flash of bright light hits something during a storm).
