New anaconda species – level 2
07-03-2024 07:00
Researchers in Ecuador’s rainforest discovered a new type of snake – the world’s largest, a green anaconda.
This species separated from similar snakes 10 million years ago but it still looks almost the same today. Dutch biologist Freek Vonk shared a video which showed how big these snakes were. They can be up to six meters long and weigh up to 200 kilograms.
Scientists used to think that there was only one type of green anaconda, but now they know that there is a different kind called the ‘northern green anaconda’. This finding helps us understand how oil spills affect the natural world and human health.
Difficult words: species (a kind of plant or animal), oil spill (when oil gets into the sea, river, and so on).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
