New EU border rules– level 1
03-06-2024 07:00
Travel businesses in Europe are getting ready for a new EU border system. The system is starting in autumn this year.
This new system will be for non-EU people, like UK citizens. They must give their fingerprints and a photo before they come to the EU. People can get late at UK border points like Dover, the Eurostar station in London, and the Eurotunnel in Folkestone. Right now, passport checks take about 45 seconds to 1.5 minutes. The new system will take a few more minutes per person.
Dover is spending 10 million pounds to make things smoother. Eurotunnel is spending 70 million pounds on new lanes and machines. Businesses worry about long waits. The EU may allow fewer checks for the first six months.
Difficult words: border (the line between two countries), citizen (a person who lives in a country or town), fingerprint (lines and marks on a person’s fingers).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are some of the measures being taken by Dover and Eurotunnel to accommodate the new EU border system for non-EU citizens?
