No screens in Swedish schools – level 2

04-05-2026 07:00

For a long time, Sweden used many computers in schools. Every student had a tablet. But now, the government is changing the rules.

The government wants to use paper books and pens again. They think that children cannot read well because they look at screens all day. They want children to write by hand to learn better. There are new rules already today. Small preschool children don’t use tablets in school anymore. Soon, students will not be allowed to use mobile phones in class. Some studies say that screens are bad for young brains. Experts say that screens distract children. They don’t look at the teacher but at the screen.

Other countries in Europe are considering doing the same thing. Some people say this is a mistake because the future is digital. But Sweden thinks that books are better for young students.

Difficult words: preschool ( children who are too young for regular school), allowed (when you can do something), distract (to take your mind away from what you are doing).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What reasons has the Swedish government given for reintroducing paper books and pens into classrooms?
