No screens in Swedish schools – level 3

04-05-2026 07:00

Sweden is changing its education system by moving away from digital screens and returning to traditional learning tools.

For decades, students have used computers and tablets every day. Now, the government is pushing for a comeback of physical books, notebooks, and handwriting. This is happening because students have problems with reading and concentration. Officials believe that while technology is important, too much screentime has negatively impacted how children read and process information.

New rules are already being implemented. Preschools no longer have to use tablets, and a ban on mobile phones in classrooms is planned for later this year. By the year 2028, schools will use real books for most lessons. Health experts say excessive screen time can hurt a child’s brain. Other countries like Finland and Denmark are now considering the same change. However, some critics warn that by limiting technology in classrooms, students might be less prepared for a future that is driven by advanced technology. It is important to find the right balance between traditional skills and modern digital needs.

Difficult words: implement (to start to use a new plan or a new system), excessive (too much of something), advanced (at a high level or using very modern ideas).
