Sudan is a 45-year-old northern white rhino – he is 100 years of age in human years. He is the last male of the species and he lives in Kenya at a conservancy.

As Sudan is very old, he is getting sick and there is not much the people can do to help him. He lives with two female northern white rhinos who are also the last of the subspecies.

Scientists hope to save the northern white rhino subspecies. They want to use southern white rhinos as surrogates – they would carry a northern white rhino baby and give birth to it.

Difficult words: species (an animal kind), conservancy (an organisation which tries to help animals), subspecies (a specific type of a species), surrogate (a mother who carries a baby which is not hers).
