People Attack the US Capitol – level 2
12-01-2021 07:00
Last Thursday, the US government formally confirmed Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
At the same time, the US president, Donald Trump, gave a speech near the White House. Thousands of people came to the event to show support for Trump. Trump repeated that the election was not fair, and he asked people to fight for the truth. Some people started to walk towards the US Capitol, which is the seat of the US government.
Angry people broke into the building and violence began. People broke windows and they tried to get to the House Chamber. Police had to take members of the government to a safe place. Police shot one woman, and several people were hurt and some died.
Difficult words: confirm (to say that something is accepted), victory (when somebody wins), speech (when somebody speaks in front of other people), seat (an important place in a government), the House Chamber (a large room where members of the House of Representatives, a part of the government, meet to do business).
