Pirates Attack Ships – level 1

Pirates are at sea. They attack ships. They take away the crew. They ask for money. When companies pay, pirates set the ship and crew free.
Many pirates are in the Gulf of Guinea. Ships sail through the gulf. They bring many different things to African countries. Pirates know that Africa needs the things. Pirates wait in rivers near the coast.
22 incidents happen last year. Pirates in the gulf take away 130 sailors. They kill one sailor.
Many pirates come from Nigeria. The country has a lot of problems. Many people lose jobs. They become pirates.
It is important to stop the pirates. They are very dangerous. Countries must work together if they want to stop the pirates.
Difficult words: crew (people who work on a ship or plane), set free (to make somebody free again), incident (something that happens).
