Putin wants nuclear weapons in Belarus – level 3
31-03-2023 07:00
On Saturday, the Russian president Vladimir Putin said, that he would station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, Ukraine’s neighbor. It’s one of Russia’s most pronounced nuclear signals since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine 13 months ago.
Putin likened it to the US stationing its weapons in Europe, while insisting that Russia wouldn’t violate its nuclear non-proliferation promises.
NATO spokesperson said that Russia had consistently broken its arms control commitments and that Putin’s rhetoric was dangerous and irresponsible. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry called for an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council and for the international community to take decisive measures to prevent Russia’s use of nuclear weapons.
Difficult words: liken (to compare), proliferation (increasing the number or amount of something), rhetoric (the technique of using language effectively).
