Qatar does not end the Israel-Gaza war – level 3

13-11-2024 07:00

Qatar has decided to withdraw from its role as a mediator in peace talks between Israel and Hamas due to the lack of progress.

According to reports, the United States was unhappy with Hamas leaders operating from their base in Qatar, claiming that Hamas had repeatedly rejected new offers for a ceasefire. Qatar’s decision follows criticism that Hamas was not showing good faith in negotiations, meaning they were not serious about reaching a compromise. Qatar has been trying to help end the conflict in Gaza, pushing for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. However, without a willingness to negotiate from both sides, Qatar feels that continuing is not useful.

The Qatari government said it was willing to help again if both parties showed real commitment to making peace. Meanwhile, Egypt might continue as a mediator since it has maintained contact with all sides in the conflict.

Difficult words: mediator (someone who helps two sides reach an agreement), ceasefire (an agreement between two armies to stop fighting to allow discussions about peace), compromise (an agreement where both sides make adjustments).
