Restaurants lie about food hygiene – level 1

11-10-2024 07:00

The BBC finds out that some food places, like small restaurants and supermarkets, in England and Wales are not honest. They lie about their food hygiene.

Food hygiene are rules on how to keep and prepare food. The Food Standards Agency gives a score from zero to five to show if a place is clean and safe. But some places put better scores than they really have. For example, a Sainsbury’s store says it has a score of five. But it is a zero.

BBC reporters ask some places about it. They say that they do not lie. Others do not say anything at all. Experts say that this problem is happening in many places in the UK.

Difficult words: lie (to not tell the truth), rule (a statement which says what you can or cannot do), score (a number which shows how good something is).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the issue that the BBC discovered about food places in England and Wales regarding their food hygiene scores?
