Scotland after Brexit – level 1
11-06-2024 15:00
The island of Skye in Europe is having problems because of Brexit.
The McKinnon family is fishing for a long time. They like Brexit at first because of fish quotas. But they are unhappy now. They sell most of their fish to Europe. But prices are down. There is more paperwork. The salmon industry on Skye is losing money because of Brexit. In the past, the island gets help from the European Union. Now, they get money from the British government. It is not enough. It is hard to find workers.
People on Skye say that Brexit makes things cost more and be harder. Some want Scotland to be independent and join the EU again.
Difficult words: fish quotas (rules on how much fish people can catch), paperwork (documents to fill out), join (to become a part of a group or team).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Why are the McKinnon family and other people on the island of Skye unhappy with Brexit, and what are some of the consequences they have experienced as a result?
